Success Through Organization
by Cindy Rowzee, AG

Organization is the key to being a successful genealogical researcher.
This means being organized with your paper files, your computer files
and how you accomplish your research. Knowing what information
you have and how to access that information helps so that you do
not repeat research. There are many different ways to organize your
family history and there is no right way for every person. The right
way is what works best for you. The best thing to do is to look at
many different ways of organizing and try and figure out what will
work best for you. Just make sure that your system is flexible
so that if something isn't working you can try something else
and easily change it.

Knowing what information you have is only the first step to becoming
a successful researcher. Any research that you do should also be
approached in an organized manner. It is called the methodology
of genealogy, the method by which you would search the records
that are available. If you were to approach your research in an
organized and a systematic manner then your outcomes would
be much more successful. Records that are available are different
all over the world, from country to country, state to state and even
just town to town. Knowing what is available and having a plan
about how to search those records will help you in the long run.

There are many tools out there to help you as you work towards
becoming more organized and the internet is one of the biggest
of those. You can learn many different styles just by browsing
the internet, or from taking classes such as the “Organizing
Your Family History” course which begins September 1 on
GenClass <www.genclass.com/Organizing.htm>.
Be sure to check out the other great classes on GenClass
<www.genclass.com/schedulerest2008.htm> to learn which
records to consult, and how to apply specific methodology to
your research problems.

By knowing what information you have and also what sources
are available to you, you can indeed be a successful researcher.
Many of your brick walls can be overcome through being organized.

+---------------- TIP OF THE MONTH ----------------------+

Tip of the Month:
When consulting Web sites for your genealogical research, in addition
to adding them to your “Bookmarks” or “Favorites” list in your favorite
browser, you should also copy all of the relevant information and
document the source (if the Web site owner provided one) and
the URL (Web address). The Internet is a dynamic medium —
a particular site could be here one day and gone tomorrow!
A print out of at least the first page may also prove useful.
File it in a binder labeled “Internet Resources.”
