"Kids and Genealogy"
by Alexandra Goldberg
I
was watching recently the Kids Channel on Roots Television.
Young genealogists participating at the 2007 FGS conference
were talking about their genealogical experiences.
Most of them started very young under the age of ten.
WOW!
I
don't remember having an interest in my family history and
ancestors at that young age. Although I always liked history,
the stories of kings and queens, court intrigues, knights fights,
were much more exciting than exploring my own roots.
In matter of fact I never connected the notion of history with
my family.
History was mysterious and exciting, my family as much as
I loved them, was simply normal and normal was boring.
It wasn't until years later that I became hooked on genealogy.
But that time most of the elderly in my family were gone.
What a waste?
Fortunately,
nowadays genealogy is making a big comeback.
It is a favorite hobby of millions around the globe and even
a part of schools curriculum. Getting kids involved in their
family history has many extra advantages, much beyond
them knowing their roots.
Genealogy
is not an activity for a loner. One needs a family
with all its entourage to conduct a successful research.
It means interacting with people of different ages,
temperaments, occupations, living in different places.
It means developing many skills: research online and in person
in libraries and archives, geographical cognizance,
historical knowledge of particular areas in particular times
and the politico-socio-economical conditions, organization
writing, creativity, digital literacy and more.
Did
someone say that it takes a village to raise a child?
It sure takes a village to raise and to be a genealogist.
Children's
natural curiosity makes them especially suited
for genealogical pursuits. They are not interested in lists
of names, copies of ship manifests or documents.
Through active play, creative fun, exciting story, discovery trip,
fascination with an individual ancestor, they will grow up
to appreciate their heritage.
The "Genealogy for Kids" course at GenClass
begins May 1, 2008 and offers tips for guiding you into
sharing a common passion of research, discovery,
creativity and fun with children.
Registration
is now open for this class!

+---------------- TIP OF THE MONTH ----------------------+
Tip
of the Month: Spring cleaning? Consider donating some of
those genealogy books or CDs that you may no longer be using
to your local library or genealogical/historical society.
Be sure to get a proper receipt for your contribution, and check
with a tax professional or the IRS web site <www.irs.gov>
to see if you can claim the donation when filing your tax return.
